How to prepare for a interview - our top tips

Getting ready for an interview?


It can be nerve wracking experience if you go in feeling unprepared.


But after 12 years of placing candidates in healthcare roles across Australia, we've learnt a thing or two about what the interview process really entails.


We're not ones to gatekeep, so here's some interview tips to help you succeed in your next interview.

 

1. Really know them.

Do you research. Take a look and a note of their website, LinkedIn and a Google search of where they’re mentioned online.

 

2. Provide experience examples and details

Explain your experience as if the Interview Panel weren't in the Aged Care sector. Use the STAR method – situation, task, action, result to answer questions.

 

3. Dress to impress

First impressions count. You’re an aged care professional who is looking at securing a new opportunity. Own it! If you’re attending an interview straight from work and can't get changed, let us know and we can inform the facility.

 

4. Arrive early and organised

Bring the right attitude to the role immediately and be punctual. Research travel time and allow yourself to get there 15 minutes earlier. If travelling by car, double check about parking. If it’s a video interview, ensure you have strong internet and have no issues logging in. And that you’re in a quiet environment.

 

5. Positive body language

Stay alert during the interview, maintain good eye contact, and stay enthused. Avoid fidgeting, leaning back on your chair, chewing gum, yawning or frowning.

 

6. Be positive about company and co-workers

Depending on your circumstances (and the reason for leaving your current employer) this can be difficult. However, trying hard not to ‘bad mouth’ previous positions, companies or employers is always recommended.


7. Be self-confident

High self-esteem and self-confidence are the hallmarks of a successful individual. With confidence, be able to demonstrate how you have overcome obstacles. There’s nothing wrong with feeling good about yourself.

 

8. Exhibit enthusiasm

Employers always like to see that candidates are enthusiastic about the company and the role that you are interviewing for.


9. Prepare questions

This is the last part of any interview and a very important one. Delve into the role and ask questions that may not have been covered during the interview. Be prepared with questions to ask e.g.


  • What will be my biggest challenge in this role?
  • What does the support structure look like?
  • What excites you about working for the organisation?
  • What is the next step from here?
